More About What Coaching Is and Isn't

Life Coaching in an amazing way to learn to dance differently with the world around you. It’s a study in becoming a part of the great plan and inevitable fiasco that is living a human life. It seeks to banish the sense of being apart from what really makes your heart sing and the alienation of feeling outside of the world you live in.

The sense of empowerment that my clients feel when, with gentle challenging and insightful reflection from me, they suddenly discover a door opening in themselves, a sense of “I can” where there used to be a whole lot of “I can’t,” or a deeper understanding of their purpose in life is quite beautiful to watch and I’m thankful every time it happens to be a witness to such beauty.

After several years coaching from a traditional platform, I was called to bring in my intuitive gifts in other ways, namely offering clients the opportunity to receive intuitive readings to begin their exploration of whatever issue brings them to my door.

However, tho I begin by using tarot and other intuitive tools to extend a client’s understanding of where they have been, where they are, and where they may be headed in the near to distant future, I always bring it back to the client ~ they are the expert, the guru, the most potent reader of their life’s story and the one fully in charge of and capable of manifesting their truest potential!

Having complete faith and holding space for the client is a hallmark of what Life Coaching is and how it differs from talk therapy or even career or productivity coaching where the client seeks expertise from another professional who is tasked with helping the client to change or redefine how they are operating in the world.

In Life Coaching, the ideal clients should be ready and willing to take full responsibility for the change they seek to manifest. What they may be searching for is an ally, someone who has expertise going through massive transformation and surviving the journey, to help guide them through the murky or discomforting waters that come with desiring and creating that change.

Another hallmark of Life Coaching is turning inaction into action by concluding all sessions with at least one action item co-designed by coach and client which the client will report back on in the subsequent session. This provides built in accountability for endeavors that sometimes don't come with traditional benchmarks, especially since many people hire Life Coaches because they feel like they are operating in a vacuum and there is no one to witness growth or progress otherwise.

These action items could be a concrete task:

Write ten pages of that dissertation before Friday!

Or, a question to meditate on based on what was uncovered in the session:

Why can't my heart and my head agree on wether to leave my job?

Or, a combo platter:

Give myself one hour every day to write. If the words don't come, sit and meditate on what is going on between my head which says "wait" and my heart which says "write."

Believe it or not, these small kinds of action steps and thoughtful, focused meditations can create big, lasting change very swiftly, especially if you are truly ready to let go of what's holding back or keeping you small and willing to start listening to that inner voice that's been calling you to change, grow, dream big, and follow your bliss.

Listen, this whole human endeavor is one big fiasco. Our only hope for happiness is take the lead while we learn to dance with what frightens us. At least that's been my experience.
